With the upcoming holiday weekend of Labor Day approaching, we thought it would be a great time to talk about all the hard work that some of our furry friends have had to put in over the years to have people realize just how AMAZING they are!
You may not realize this, but until recently black cats and black dogs were completely overlooked at rescues and shelters! Thankfully, in recent times that has changed a little – but not entirely.
Organizations across the country have worked tirelessly to help dispel the myths and misconceptions – especially regarding black cats in particular. Similar to nursery rhymes or traditional superstitions, most of the negative things you think of are truly based on nothing factual! Black cats are not witches, nor shapeshifters as early settlers believed. They also are not predicting misfortune, as thought in medieval times. In all reality, there are more positive associations with black cats than you might realize! For example, British fishermen’s wives believe having a black cat in the house ensures their husband will return home safely. Welsh folklore suggests having a black cat brings good luck to the home that they live in. Japanese culture believes that black cats bring prosperity and fortune to their owners, bless marriages and ensure good harvests. Scottish culture also believes that a black cat brings fortune, and Germany believes if you encounter a black cat – it will bring you good luck.
So, the next time you are looking for a friend to add to your home, and you see a black cat or dog – give them an extra look. As of recently, there’s been a general belief that black cats and dogs have the most even tempers and loving personalities. So, let’s keep rolling with the positive and let go of the silly negatives! There has been so much work done into giving these beautiful animals a second chance, that it’s truly been a labor of love – and if you give one a chance as well, you’ll realize it for yourself.
