We've got Howl-O-Ween on the brain... Keeping your fur friend safe and fun costume ideas!

Trick or treating can be fun for the kids and the pets... but it's important to know what isn't safe for the furkids! Here's a guideline to help teach everyone what to avoid sharing with your pet...and some cute costume suggestions for them to wear while doing it!

  • Chocolate: Contains theobromine, which is similar to caffeine and can be deadly to dogs, especially small breeds. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, panting, excessive thirst, urination, and high heart rate.

  • Xylitol: A sweetener found in many varieties of candy corn, gum, and sugar-free treats that can cause low blood sugar, seizures, and death in dogs.

  • Raisins and grapes: Can be extremely dangerous for dogs, causing kidney issues. Even one raisin or grape can make a dog severely ill or even kill them.

  • Macadamia nuts: Can cause pancreatitis and are toxic to dogs. Signs of poisoning include vomiting, lethargy, and severe neurologic signs.

  • Candy wrappers: A choking hazard.

  • Sugar: Can cause gastric disturbances in dogs and cats.

If your dog eats candy, you should call your vet or the Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661. If your dog ate xylitol, take them to your vet or an emergency vet immediately.
